I love how all hotel rooms in Vegas have a convenient and easy to use safe. I always use it to store the unneeded items in my wallet that I'd hate to have to cancel/replace as well as some money and any personal items of value.
A couple years ago, I was in a cab on our way to McCarran Airport in bumper to bumper traffic after just checking out of the Mirage. Not 2 blocks away, I realized that my watch, my ipod, and other miscellaneous items were left in our safe. This became a huge inconvenience. First, I didn't want us, nor our friends to miss our flights, but I wasn't leaving Vegas without my watch. Would you leave this beauty?
As we had the cab turn around, I called the Mirage and they said I'd be able to get it, but it wasn't going to be nearly as simple as me going back to my room to retrieve it. Since I had checked out, this was a matter of security. Upon re-entering the Mirage, as instructed, I went to one of the interior doors which was guarded by security. I waited there for nearly 5 minutes for my escort to arrive. By this time, I was a bit excited and had visions of what it looks like in these rooms that are not for the general public. "Ocean's 11" scenes were racing through my head. Finally, I was escorted through a series of hallways and into an office where the head of security had my belongings. What a relief! I then rushed back to my wife and friends so we could quickly get to the airport. Fortunately, my wife had us leave ridiculously early the first time, so we still had plenty of time to spare prior to our flight home.
I got very fortunate that our last cab driver was great and completely avoided all traffic on Las Vegas Blvd as opposed to the original re re who was trying to scam some tourists.
In short, don't forget to double check for any belongings when leaving...especially the trusty safe.
