The Smart Money: How the World's Best Sports Bettors Beat the Bookies Out of Millions
By Michael Konik
I was really excited to read this book, as Michael Konik is one of the better gambling writers, and the world of big-time sports betting is pretty fascinating. That said, I was ultimately disappointed.
It begins promisingly enough, as the author is recruited into the betting syndicate, or "Brain Trust". This group uses computer models to calculate the best bets and the ideal lines for football and basketball games. Since the leaders of the syndicate are well known wiseguys, the casinos won't take any of their money, and that's where the author comes in: He places the large bets at the books where the leaders cannot.
Konik tells the story of placing HUGE bets at Sports Books such Caesars, and living the life of a high roller the whole time. However, the subtitle is misleading, this book does not tell HOW they determine the bets, its more of a "I went here and placed this bet, it won....I placed this other one, it lost". It's interesting for a while, but those looking for insight on the sports betting world will be disappointed. That said, the book ins't particularly a good read either. Due to the identities of those involved, you can tell a lot has been left out, and references to his girlfriend's kinkiness seem horribly out of place.
I think this book strives to be the "Bringing Down the House" of sports betting, but falls way short.
